Kidney cancer & renal masses
Assessment of kidney masses and individualised treatment options.
Overview
A kidney mass may be found during investigations for symptoms or on a scan performed for another reason. Further assessment helps clarify what the finding means and which options are suitable.
Understanding the finding
The size, appearance and location of the mass are considered alongside your kidney function and general health. Additional tests may be recommended.
Management options
- Surveillance in selected circumstances
- Renal biopsy where appropriate
- Robotic or open partial nephrectomy to remove a lesion while preserving kidney tissue
- Robotic, laparoscopic or open radical nephrectomy when indicated
- Ablative therapy or stereotactic radiation (SABR) in selected circumstances
We discuss the benefits and risks of suitable options, taking your individual circumstances into account.
Prepare for your appointment
Bring your referral, relevant test results and scans, and a list of medicines. It can help to write down the questions you would like to ask.
